Provide options, not lame excuses

May 25, 2023 | Tips

Ahoy, everyone.

so recently I began reading "The pragmatic programmer", and I've been learning a lot of smaller little tips throughout so you might hear that tagline more than once. πŸ˜…πŸ˜‚

This one was a "lesson" I learned first from my dad and got reminded of today. So thanks, Dad. πŸ˜‚

If something ever comes up. Don't make some stupid excuse. Even if can't do it, then either just straight up say why it can't happen, or provide an alternative option.

Let me give you an example.

For example, if a friend calls you to do something with him/her, but you can't because of whatever. Just say. Hey. I can't. But maybe let's do something next week.Β

Or a more job-oriented example.

Let's say a feature isn't possible to do for you because of... I don't know. Who cares at this point? πŸ˜‚

Okay. It isn't doable. Then at least offer up different options on further next steps. Maybe offer up another twist of that feature, or other ideas, or whatever.Β

I think you get the idea.

Provide Options, and don’t make lame excuses.Β

So yeah.

I hope you found this little evidence-based "tip" helpful.

See ya.
